Here’s some information I received just in time for the tax season. St. John’s Bread & Life Program is offering free tax preparation to lower income families (earning under $50,000/year) and individuals (earning under $18,000/year) until April 15th. St. John’s University student volunteers, supervised by IRS-certified tax preparers, are using their accounting knowledge to help those who live in the Brooklyn area. The program provides hands-on learning for students who become familiar with tax preparation software and also greatly benefits the community. Last year, the program brought in $3.7 million into the local community through tax refunds.
”Many of our guests have no idea that there may be funds due them from the government,” said Anthony Butler, executive director of St. John’s Bread & Life. “This program is a wonderful opportunity for them to secure those funds and for many provides assistance with tax prep that would not otherwise be available to them.”
Assistance will be provided with 1040 and 1040 ES forms and for those who would like to file for special tax credits. Volunteers will be on-hand Mondays through Thursdays from 12:30-7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be no tax assistance on Fridays and Sundays.
St. John’s Bread and Life is located at 795 Lexington Avenue between Malcolm X Blvd. and Patchen Ave.
