Here’s some cool news: Bed Stuy resident Rob Gaines will star in a new sci-fi comedy, Mad Mel and the Marradians. The play will premiere at the Main Stage Theatre (312 West 36th Street in Manhattan) on Monday, July 11 at 6PM at the 2011 Midtown International Theatre Festival for the first of five performances. The play will also run July 16, July 19, July 24 and July 28. Click here to visit the Midtown International Theatre Festival website and to purchase tickets. The tickets are under $20, so the price is quite reasonable. Also, they have discounts for students and seniors, so check it out.
Here’s a bit about the play and its star from the director of Mad Mel and the Marradians, Gary Morgenstein:
Rob plays Melvin Worthington, an insufferably vain writer who has invented best-selling “scholarly” books on the ancient aliens, the Marradians. However, the Marradians are real. Now they are mad and are invading Earth. In pearls.
Rob Gaines’ major stage credits include York Shakespeare (Merchant of Venice, Jew of Malta) and Peculiar Works Project (Off Project: East- and West-Village Fragments), with films ranging from The Tickets (3+4 Productions) and Betserai (Angela Gunn). He has playmastered and acted in countless performances with the Instant Shakespeare Company, where his favorite role was Sir Andrew Aguecheek. He is a founding member /sometime lecturer at the Killington, Vermont, Shakespeare retreat.
It’s so nice to see Bed-Stuy residents with starring roles in plays. Go Rob! And go see the play and support your Bed-Stuy neighbors!
