Snow In The Stuy
Public schools closed and city plows ready to go. After being spared from predicted snow this past weekend, people are taking this storm seriously. At least eight inches or more is expected to fall in our area. As of mid-morning, an inch or so has fallen so far in Fulton Park. It’s a winter wonderland, [...]

An Alternative to Recycling Christmas Trees
Over here in Stuyvesant Heights, a couple of brownstone residents got creative with Christmas tree branches and trimmings. Layering pines and spruces in gardening pottery make for a wintery bouquet that can last up to springtime.

Dig We Must!
The weekend’s snowstorm arrived 48 hours prior to Winter Solstice! Snowfall amount in Central Park was recorded at 10.9 inches, but measurements in this part of Stuy Heights averaged around eight inches. Residents were out in clusters with shovels and salt in hand. Others took some time to play in the [...]

Unwind and Rejuvenate at Le Château de Frenche
Now that the holiday season is underway, I’m already starting to feel the stress associated with having lots to do and no time in which to do it. Some time ago I won a gift certificate to Le Château de French Day Spa and Private Tea Room in a raffle. I haven’t used it [...]

Free Mulch At Fulton Park
There’s a nice pile of woodchip mulch up for grabs at the west end entrances of Fulton Park (Fulton Street, between Lewis and Stuyvesant Avenues). The mulch appears to be from shrubs that were cut down at the west end of the park near Lewis Avenue. So the once hidden benches and circular pathway are [...]

Peering Into Patrick Van Doren Garden
On the northeast corner of Malcolm X Boulevard and Quincy Streets sits a colorful, mini-agricultural community garden. As I was taking pictures, the president of the Quincy Street Block Association president approached me. She engulfed me with a wealth of information in minutes. The garden serves as a few purposes:
Events: the park is available for private [...]
