Sud Vino e Cucino Opens on Bedford

Great news for the folks over in West Bed! We tweeted this yesterday after seeing it on Eater: there’s a new Italian restaurant on Bedford and Lexington. The place is called Sud Vino e Cucina and it looks great.  We weren’t sure when we were going to be able to get over there and get some pics, but fortunately for us, frequent tipster Anna sent us the above shot of the newly opened spot with the message, “My husband poked his head in and said that it looked great–crostini, insalate, antipasti!!! Westbed!”  We can’t wait to get over there and try it ourselves! Has anyone had a meal there yet?

Mail Issues on Hancock

A reader wrote us about some mail problems (or rather, mailperson problems) on Hancock.

I am writing to you today because my husband and I have HUGE mail problems for the past few months. We had very important documents lost and paychecks that never made it. I cannot even start to tell you how inconvenient it is to lose documents or wait so much time to get paid. I even saw one of the postwomen putting our mail on a wet floor. I asked why she did that, she looked at me and said that’s how it is. She didn’t even sort the mail from the 3 different apts in the brownstone! I am VERY annoyed and not sure what to do about it. If I make a complaint to the USPS, they won’t really take it into consideration but if it becomes a community problem, then it’s different. We could even involve the media in this. It would be nice if you could put a post on your blog about this and see people’s reaction. If they react then we could probably organize a general complaint, if not, it means we are the only ones suffering from it.

I’ve been lucky enough to have a wonderful mail carriers here in Brooklyn, so I don’t know how to address this problem. So is this reader the only one suffering with bad mail service? Have any other readers around Hancock Street and Stuyvesant Avenue had similar problems? What’s the best recourse in a situation like this?

Eye on the Stuy

Two supermarkets that serve Bed-Stuy residents, specifically Foodtown on Fulton (pictured above) and Pioneer Supermarket located near the Clinton-Hill/Bed-Stuy border, made the list of most fined supermarkets. Pioneer landed the top spot. [Gothamist]

A new restaurant called Wicked Good Franks will open up on Myrtle Avenue in Bed-Stuy (finally something nice on the east side of Classon!). Myrtle Minutes reported in mid-February that the spot would open by the end of the month, but on a recent trip down Myrtle I noticed the place wasn’t open yet. [Myrtle Minutes]

A Harriet Tubman Day celebration will be held at Boys and Girls High School on Thursday morning. [Citizen Who]

Shout Out to MKT 470!

Dr. Comeforo (far left), the students and me (center)

I’d like to send out a big thanks to Dr. Kristin Comeforo and her Social Media and Marketing Class at Berkeley College.  Recently they invited me to speak about my blogging experiences and the class gave me great feedback and marketing tips that I plan to use in the future.  It’s was so much fun to interact with students who really know their stuff!

Vitamins in the Hood

A reader emailed us to let us know that a new GNC has opened on Fulton Street near Arlington Place.  We passed by on Saturday on our way to Peaches and sure enough we spotted the new GNC with its Grand Opening banner.  Think this is a good addition to the strip?

Lewis Gallery Closing

Here’s the kind of news that we hate to receive in our inbox: Lewis Gallery, located at 411 Lewis Avenue, will officially close their doors at the end of the month. Owner Gwendolyn Lewis sent out an email in which she thanked her loyal customers for their patronage over the past 21 years and she hinted that Lewis Gallery may pop up in different incarnations in the future. Wednesday, March 2nd through Sunday March 6th they will be having Customer Appreciation Week and the prices on all of the gallery’s art and merchandise will be drastically reduced.

How do you think the loss of Lewis Gallery will affect the retail strip on Lewis Avenue?

Please Support the Brooklyn Prom and Scholarship Project

Prom season is almost here, so that means that it is time once again to support the Brooklyn Prom and Scholarship Project! The Brooklyn Prom and Scholarship Project (the charitable arm of Dazzle Divaz LLC) is kicking off the 2011 Prom season to help our Brooklyn teens go to their high school prom. Their “Dress Drive” is running now through May 7th and they are seeking donations of gently used dresses, shoes and accessories. Last year they collected 200 dresses and were able to help many girls go to the prom. This year, they would like to help more girls as well as extend a helping hand to young men. They are accepting financial donations that will be used to help rent tuxes and suits.

And the Winner Is…

Thanks to everyone who participated in the ticket giveaway today! I’m so fortunate to have community partners who offer up the goodies so that I can create giveaways on the blog. Please support them by going to see The Legend of Buster Neal at the Billie Holiday Theatre.  So someone actually guessed the winning number!  The winner is: Carol Porter! Carol, do you have ESP?

I chose the number 17 because my cat will be 17 years old in two weeks.  I didn’t think anyone would guess such an odd number.  Anyway, thanks again to all of you. Hopefully I’ll have some more giveaways soon.  Carol, I’ll email you backchannel to tell you how you will receive your tickets.  (Scene from The Legend of Buster Neal; Photo credit: Images by Tanja)
